A short but turbulent history of the garden

Lithograph from the 19th century depicting the palace and pond at the Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University

The origins of the garden date back to the end of the 18th century, when the Commission of National Education gave the university the property of the former Czartoryski family garden located on the Wesoła juridiction. In 1783, the decision was made to create an auxiliary garden for the chair of chemistry and natural history. In time, it became a forge of botany - it was here that the first research into the flora of mountain plants in Poland was conducted, and collections of tropical orchids and carnivorous pitcher plants were established.

The garden was enlarged several times in the 19th century; today it covers about 9.6 hectares, and its alleys, ponds and flowerbeds form a unique landscape work of art, protected in the Register of Historic Monuments. Thanks to its status as a unit of the Jagiellonian University, the facility has maintained its continuity in research and education, while remaining open to visitors. Today, the Krakow "botanic" is not only a scientific facility, but also a venue for concerts, open-air exhibitions and themed walks that attract thousands of Krakow residents and tourists every year.

Location and access - how to get to the 'botanist'?

The garden is located at 27 Kopernika Street, right next to the Śniadecki College. From the Market Square you can walk here in 12-15 minutes along the Planty. If you prefer public transport, get off at the stop "Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny" (trams 2, 4, 14, 20, 24) or "Rondo Mogilskie" (lines 5, 52, 73). Drivers can use paid parking spaces in Zone A - the nearest parking bays can be found on Lubicz Street or Ossolińskiego Square.

Attention: no bicycles are allowed in the gardenHowever, there is a secure stand right in front of the gate on the Śniadeckich Street side. It is therefore most convenient to leave the bike there. For the needs of tourists, an interactive map of the Cracow Botanical Garden (link in the box next to the article) - it is worth downloading it before visiting, as the GPS signal among the greenhouses and historic walls can be capricious.

Remember to keep your receipt/PDF in case you are inspected at the garden.

Discounts, passes and when you get in for free

If you plan to return more often - for example to photograph the next stages of magnolia or orchid bloom - think about a season or annual ticket. With as few as four visits, the annual pass for a resident pays for itself in full, plus it allows you to enter the garden during the golden morning hours, when access for organised groups is limited.

Free entry will receive:

  • Children < 4 years,
  • young people and adults with a disability certificate (various degrees) - the disabled person's carer also enters free of charge,
  • participants in selected cultural events (e.g. Biologists' Night, Museums' Night - number of places limited, booking required).

Garden plan and most interesting zones

Colour orientation map of the Jagiellonian University Botanical Garden with zone legend

The garden is divided operationally into three sections: Arboretum, Greenhouse Plants Section and Alpinarium. The oldest section - the arboretum - hides majestic beech trees, plane trees and a more than 200-year-old specimen of the ginkgo tree. In May, the crowns of the trees here form a green cathedral, and in autumn they light up with a fever of gold and red.

Greenhouses and Palm House

Section Palmiarnia Ogród Botaniczny Kraków, 15 m high, impresses with a forest of umbrella-shaped Washingtonias and banana trees. In late summer, the Canary Island date palm ripens here - not to taste, of course, but to admire. Right next door you will find the 'Jubilee' greenhouse, where the country's largest collection of orchids (more than 500 species). Their explosion of colour is best viewed between February and April.

Succulent lovers should take a look at 'Victoria' - here, under a glass dome, a thousand cacti grow from miniature mammillaria to massive 'mother-in-law chairs'. In the same greenhouse, there is an exhibition of carnivorous plants: pitcher plants, flycatchers, and capturines.

Mountain collections in the Alpinarium

The eastern part of the garden is more than a hectare of alpinarium, in which the ecosystems of the Tatras, the Alps and the Caucasus are recreated. In one walk, you will see edelweiss, Tatra rockrose or narrow-leaved gentian. Differences in altitude have been arranged with natural boulders, and a miniature stream provides moisture for the plants.

Pond and water garden

A small pond with a footbridge spills over to the south of the site. In summer, mushrooms in a dozen varieties bloom here and dragonflies populate the water surface. This is the most popular picnic spot - but remember that spreading blankets on the lawns is only allowed in designated areas.

Plant sale and sale - exotics for the home

Tropical pond with royal Victoria and lilies in the "Victoria" greenhouse

Twice a year - in May and October - the garden organises a sale of its propagation surplus. Prices start at 5 zlotys for young palm and cactus seedlings and reach several dozen zlotys for specimens which are several years old. Orchids from the show collection are most popular; in order to buy them, you have to queue even before the cash desk opens. The sale of plants is a great opportunity to take a "piece of botany" to your windowsill or amateur greenhouse and, at the same time, to support the garden's activities - all proceeds go towards the conservation of the historic greenhouses.

The cultural heart of Krakow: concerts and events

Although flora is the main protagonist of the garden, for several years now the stage has also been taken over by... music. During the summer season, the natural amphitheatre by the pond hosts SVITLO concerts - from Vivaldi crooning the 'Four Seasons' to acoustic Coldplay covers. During Museums' Night The gates open at dusk and the alleys are lit by discreet LED illumination - a unique opportunity to see palm trees and orchids in their nighttime display.

Culture is also worth attending in January, when the entire UJ campus is overrun by Biologists' Night - Microscope workshops, DNA demonstrations and feeding carnivorous plants attract families with children. Calendar 2025 closes with a series of concerts by the Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra in the historic Zimovnik, where intimate acoustics meet tropical microclimates.

Wedding session, outdoor photography and regulations

The light seeping through the palm leaves and the mysterious alleyways of the alpinarium make the Cracow Botanical Garden is one of the most picturesque locations for an outdoor wedding. However, advance booking by email and a fee is required (currently £250/2 hours). The photographer and the bride and groom are then given special badges, allowing entry outside of the greenhouse's opening hours to the public.

Remember: tripods and drones are only allowed with written permission. For the sake of the plants, trespassing in the flowerbeds and tripping over branches with flashlights is prohibited. The garden staff will be happy to point out less frequented corners where photos will come out without random passers-by in the background.

Accessibility and free entry for people with disabilities

Most of the alleys are paved with smooth paving blocks or an asphalt mix, making it easy to navigate in a wheelchair. A ramp is available in front of the entrance and a PRM accessible toilet is located next to the ticket office. People with a severe, moderate or mild disability certificate enter free of charge; for children under 16 years of age, the guardian also receives a free ticket.

Café, toilets and visitor facilities

On the right-hand side of the main avenue, right by the pond, there is the seasonal café 'Czarka with a Flower'. The menu includes lemonades with elderflower syrup, coffee from a local roaster and ice cream with strawberry and lilac sorbet. Toilets (including an infant changing point) are located in the administration building and by the 'Victoria' greenhouse - both locations are marked on the map.

How much time to reserve for the tour?

A standard walk - entrance via the main avenue, palm house, orchidarium, alpine garden and pond - takes about 1.5 h. If you're planning a more in-depth study of the botanical labels or a macro photo shoot, be prepared for 2.5-3 h. Least people are there on Tuesdays before noon; most on Sunday afternoons and during the long May weekend, when the magnolias and cherry trees are in bloom.

The botanical garden of Krakow in four seasons

Perennial promenade; silver spruce in the centre, palace and greenhouses in the background
  • Spring (April-May): An explosion of bulb flowers, a concert of frogs in the pond and the magnificent magnolias that adorn Instagram.
  • Summer (June-August): the tropical heat in the greenhouse gives a foretaste of an exotic holiday, and the alleys are alive with the rhythm of concerts.
  • Autumn (September-October): golden maples, cinnabar hornbeams and carmine vines - the best time for landscape photography.
  • Winter (November-February): outdoor area admittedly limited, but palm house and greenhouses open; steam creates magical mists against the cacti.

BONUS: Butterfly Museum - a colourful epilogue to the tour

If you still fancy some visual fireworks, direct your steps to the Butterfly Museum on Szewska Street. It's just a 20-minute walk (or six minutes by bike). The exhibition presents hundreds of specimens from five continents, with some flying freely in the glass conservatory. After the intense green landscapes of the 'botanist', the kaleidoscope of colours of the butterfly wings will be the perfect contrast - and a great topic for your next social media post.

Photographer's guide - how to come back with a frame that others don't have

Rhododendrons and azaleas in full spring bloom

Golden hour and light shining through

In the garden, sunrise and sunset filter through 150-year-old plane trees. You will get the most beautiful "flare":

  1. Autumn With ginkgo biloba - the yellow fans of the leaves act as a natural softbox.
  2. Summer on the footbridge over the pond; here the sun hides exactly behind the dome of the Palm House, creating a silhouette of palm trees.

Set aperture f/8, AF point at leaf edge, ISO 200 - leaf focus + background flare.

Macro in the "Victoria" greenhouse

Carnivorous plants are set at eye level; sprayers spray the leaves every 30 minutes, resulting in spectacular dewdrops. Worthwhile:

  • "Inverted lens" 28 mm or tubes;
  • LED lamp on the 'hot' shoe to enhance the brilliance of the drops.

Night photography during Museum Night

The greenhouses are illuminated with 3,200 K lamps. Place the camera on a wall instead of a tripod (ban) and use the 2 s self-timer. A time of 1/4 s - 1 s at f/5.6 will give a streak of light on the pond surface and the shadows of the palm trees will draw a graphic zigzag.

Wedding session - the ideal scenario

  1. And the golden hour: portrait photography under the arboretum.
  2. Coffee break: 30 min in the "Flower Czar" (delicate blends on the tables - complimentary).
  3. Blue hour: The Palm House, when the neon lights of the city had not yet "drawn in" the garnet of the sky.

Remember to include in your booking email: names, number of people, equipment, preferred location and date. Confirmation arrives in 48 h.
