History of the Florian Gate - the Gothic guardian of the city 🕰️
The Florian Gate was built around 1300 as part of the medieval city walls surrounding Krakow. It was one of eight gates, but is the only one to have survived to this day. Its main purpose was to defend the city against invasions - it had a military and representative function.
Over time, it acquired symbolic status - it was through it that royal retinues, as well as important visitors, entered the town. In the 18th century, a Baroque helmet was added, which gave it the characteristic shape it has today. Although most of the walls were demolished in the 19th century, the Florianska Gate was saved thanks to the efforts of lovers of Krakow's history and culture.
It has been restored many times over the centuries, but its original form and the spirit of medieval Krakow have been preserved. The interior of the gate is sometimes used for temporary exhibitions, and its upper part provides a glimpse of the former course of the ramparts.
