🏞️ Kościuszko Mound in Kraków - Complete guide: tickets, directions, places of interest, views

Entrance to Fort Kosciuszko overlooking Kosciuszko Mound on a sunny day

Kosciuszko Mound is one of those places in Krakow that combine history with amazing views. Erected in honour of Tadeusz Kościuszko - the hero of the fight for freedom of Poland and the United States - it is a symbol not only of patriotism, but also of social mobilisation and national pride. It is located on St. Bronislawa Hill and rises to a height of 34.1 metres, offering a spectacular panorama of Krakow and the surrounding area.

Why is it worth it? Because it's not just a 'mound of earth' - it's also:

  • historic Austrian fort, which can be visited,
  • museum dedicated to Kosciuszko and the history of the struggle for independence,
  • one of the few places in Krakow where nature meets history and military architecture.

It is the ideal place for both a short walk and a full tour with children, loved ones or in solitary reflection.

🕰️ History of Kosciuszko Mound - from national monument to military fortress

How was it created?

After Tadeusz Kosciuszko's death in 1817, Poles - despite then living under partition - united to honour his memory. In 1820, the construction of the mound began, financed by public donations. Over the course of three years, residents of Krakow and many other regions of Poland - on foot, on horseback, and sometimes by boat - brought soil from places associated with Kościuszko's battles. They included soil from Racławice, Szczekociny, Maciejowice, but also from the USA or Italy.

Austrian fortress

In the second half of the 19th century, the Austrian authorities surrounded the mound with fortifications, creating Fort 2 "Kościuszko" - part of the Krakow Fortress. The fort has been preserved to this day and can be visited together with the mound. It is the only mound in Poland connected to such a military facility.

Further developments

The mound was renovated several times in the 20th century - including after landslides in 1997-1998. Today, it is in excellent condition, well-maintained and open to the public all year round.
