🕰️ The History of Kościuszko Mound – From National Memorial to Military Fortress

        How it all started

After Tadeusz Kościuszko’s death in 1817, Poles – still under foreign occupation at the time – united to build a monument in his honor. In 1820, construction of the mound began, funded entirely by public donations. Over the next three years, people from all over Poland carried soil from battlefields connected to Kościuszko’s legacy – Racławice, Maciejowice, Szczekociny – and even from countries like the USA, Italy, and Switzerland.

        Austrian Fortress

In the late 19th century, the Austrian authorities fortified the area around the mound, transforming it into Fort 2 “Kościuszko” – part of the Kraków Fortress system. This structure remains largely intact today and can be visited along with the mound itself.

        Restoration and Modern Use

The mound underwent several restorations in the 20th century, especially after landslides in the late 1990s. Today, it’s well maintained, open year-round, and offers both historical insight and outdoor relaxation.
